DJIA 4/14/08 STOCK MARKET TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

OUTLOOK
The Dow slightly weakens 23pts (0.19%) as a surprise loss announcement by the 4th largest bank in the U.S hits the newswires. [Wachovia Posts Surprise Loss|By Reuters | 14 Apr 2008 | 11:12 AM ET]. The index trades within an 87 pt band as the market digests a number of economic headlines [AP|Retail Sales Up a Bit|Monday April 14, 3:24 pm ET], [US business Feb inventories up 0.6 pct|By Reuters | Apr 14, 2008 10:02am EDT]. Record oil prices and the beaten US dollar also weigh in on the financial markets [Dollar weakens|By Reuters |Mon Apr 14, 2008 3:01pm EDT], [Oil Settles at Record High Near $112 a Barrel|By Reuters | 14 Apr 2008 | 02:53 PM ET]. The DJIA is now on its 2nd successive daily close below the short term up trendline, fulfilling a commonly used filter in determing validity of trendline breaks. The larger intermediate consolidation clues us in on the likelihood that the index, failing to reach any higher than 12,733 on its last peak, is headed towards the lower extreme of the range consistent with an up and down non-directional tendency. For now, a firm direction of the long term and intermediate trend remains elusive.
